Cameraless animation on 35mm clear film and stop motion 16mm

Sound design by James Ellis CARS! is built from an obsessive act of drawing, with over 600 cars hand-painted directly onto the surface of 35mm film. Through repetition, the car shifts from a singular form to a dense accumulation, echoing the congestion and dominance of vehicles within urban space. Graphic symbols drawn from road systems, traffic lights, lane markings, become dulled and contaminated, mirroring the effects of pollution. The film moves at speed, while foregrounding both the car and the film strip as automated systems locked into cycles of motion, and repetition.
