Lucy Ellis is an experimental animator based in London. In her work she explores the digital and analogue through experimenting with process and materiality. She enjoys working with scrap and found materials repurposing them to form new identities and narratives differing from their original purpose or intention. The texture of materials is important to her practice, exploring how it evokes memory and time.

Written by Dash:

“Run Wrake stylised digital surrealist animation from @lucy3llis .

This is another freelance animator collaboration project i’ve been really excited to debut with you.

Lucy is a masterful experimental animator and graphic design artist. I first spotted her work as part of a @dazed and @rabanne project.

Her work reminded me of Run Wrake, a Yemen born British artist who was particularly prolific in the 80s and 90s. Known for a collage stop frame style Run’s work was used by @mtv , Cocacola and U2 … His independent film ‘Rabbit’ was nominated for a @bafta

When i mentioned to Lucy about how her work reminded me of one of my favourite ever music videos ‘We Have Explosive’ (produced by Run Wrake for @futuresoundoflondon ) i found out that we both had a mutual love of Run’s animation and art.

The concept for the video was “forever falling forwards”…the feeling of being on an unstoppable path, traveling towards an uncertain future. Unable to catch your breath or question what was happening. like the feeling of being on a boat as it slowly capsizes.

The track is Dash UK - My Mind Is Blowing (Exclusive release via my @bandcamp www.bandcamp/dashukmusic )

I wrote this piece of music after working out the arpeggiated synth line, next i added some 909 and 707 drums, some ominous chord stabs and finally the line ‘My mind is blowing’ - drawing on influence from Hal in 2001 Space Odyssey… it’s actually a misquoted line but i much prefer it to the original sentence in the film.

I need to give a further shout out and props to @shedde0d a multimedia artist who helped with the VHS ingest and transformation to analog video. Some examples of this circut-bent process can be seen on the other slides -which is your favourite?”
